This could be the theme song for Paolo Bacigalupi's Ship Breaker. Nailer is living a hardscrabble, impoverished existence in a future Gulf Coast where rising tides have left the cities of today underwater. He spends his days scrapping for spare parts from oil tankers to "make quota" and survive, all while trying to steer clear of his abusive father. He has dreams to get free from his brutal life, but it feels impossible to get a break in a world where government is absent, gangs rule all, and people ruthlessly scavenge and steal from each other. Nailer has a chance to put his own humanity to the test when he comes across a girl in a shipwrecked clipper ship, clinging to life. He could kill her or leave her for dead and rob her, or he could help her and change his destiny.

In Froi of the Exiles, Froi and Quintana don't trust each other, and rightly so—Froi has ulterior motives for being in the Citavita. In Grave Mercy, Ismae and Gavriel work well together—though they are not always entirely trusting of one another—to protect the Duchess from power-hungry usurpers. For Gavriel's part, he does it out of a brother's love for the Duchess; for Ismae it is out of duty to Brittany and Mortain, the god of death whom she faithfully serves. Though neither are looking for love, they can't help the way they feel about each other. And as it turns out, Ismae's love might be Gavriel's only chance at salvation from certain death.
