Today is World Cat Day! It seems to exist solely for humans to fangirl/fanboy over cat gifs and videos more than they already do (hard to imagine given our tumblr feed, but challenge accepted, World Cat Day).

World Cat Day DO WANT

We have never been able to pass up any excuse to look up silly pics of cats and celebrate our intelligent, silly, fickle feline friends, so we thought we would compile a list of some of our favorite fictional cats for the occasion.

Church in The Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments

GreyCatStrummingFingers

Church is the perpetually grouchy, temperamental Shadowhunter pet cat who lives at the New York Institute. He is immortal, and has appeared with some of our favorite Shadowhunters in both The Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments, though Jem is clearly his favorite.

Favorite Church quote:

“It’s unlikely, knowing Church, that he likes you, either.” ~ Jace, in response to Simon saying he doesn’t like cats.

The black cat in Coraline

Coraline Cat

The mysterious black cat Coraline encounters in and around her house is her only true ally. He is able to move freely between the real world and the Other World, and in that alternate world, he guides Coraline as she tries to escape the Other Mother with sassy quips.

Favorite black cat quote:

“Cats don’t have names…Now you people have names. That’s because you don’t know who you are. We know who we are, so we don’t need names.” ~ black cat

The white cat in White Cat

whitecat

It would be a spoiler to say exactly who this cat is, but let’s just say Cassel’s run-ins with the mysterious white cat have quite a lot to do with his curse working family, and the guilt he harbors over unintentionally killing his best friend Lila. This cat knows how to make an impression, that’s for sure.

Favorite white cat quote:

“Good kitty. Who’s an amazing killing machine? That’s right. You are! You are a brutal brutal tiny lion! Yes, you are.” ~Daneca

Tybalt in Anna Dressed in Blood

Tybalt Anna Dressed in Blood

Tybalt is Cas’ mother’s cat, described by Cas as “a witch’s cat” who can sense ghosts and other unsavory presences. He isn’t particularly friendly, but fickle and suspicious, which comes in quite handy given Cas’s job of killing murderous ghosts.

Favorite Tybalt Quote:

“This is no ordinary cat.” ~ Thomas

Cheshire Cat in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Cheshire Cat Alice in Wonderland

Perhaps the most famous literary cat, the Cheshire Cat is an iconic, infuriating character that banters with poor Alice, confusing her with his words and his disappearing head, though he always leaves a smile behind.

Favorite Cheshire Cat Quote:

“We’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.” ~ Cheshire Cat

Mogget in the Abhorsen series

Mogget Abhorsen

Mogget is the snarky, sarcastic servant to the Abhorsens, and despite being rather lazy, he does become quite helpful to Sabriel and Lirael. However, don’t ever take his collar off if you don’t want to meet his nastier, more violent side.

Favorite Mogget quote:

“Remember I advised against this way. Wake me when whatever terrible thing is about to happen happens, or if it appears I might get wet.” ~ Mogget

Kirjava in His Dark Materials

Will Parry Kirjava HIs Dark Materials

Will Parry’s daemon settles into the form of a large multi-coloured cat, and is named Kirjava by the witch Serafina Pekkala. She separated from Will on the ferry to the Land of the Dead, and traveled with Pantalaimon, Lyra’s daemon, through the multiverse. Like any good daemon, Kirjava comforts and helps Will through every dangerous encounter he faces.

Favorite Kirjava Quote:

“His daemon knew what he should do, and said simply, ‘Lyra.'” ~ His Dark Materials, The Amber Spyglass

Medea in the Mercy Thompson series

Medea Mercy Thompson

Medea is Mercy Thompson’s pet cat, and she has an unnatural affinity for supernatural creatures. She showed up one day at the door of Mercy’s auto shop and the two have been roommates ever since. Unlike most cats, she likes vampires and werewolves, and of course, shifters like Mercy – as long as they’re petting her, that is.

Favorite Medea Quote:

“Your cat likes anyone she can convince to pet her.” ~Adam Hauptman

Crookshanks in Harry Potter

Crookshanks Harry Potter

Crookshanks is half-cat, half-Kneazle, and 100% badass companion to Hermione. He has a finely tuned evil detector, and he’s the first to identify Scabbers as a nefarious poser. He also prevents Harry from attacking Sirius Black, and helps him enter Hogwarts to warn Harry.

Fave Crookshanks quote:

This cat isn’t mad. He’s the most intelligent of his kind I’ve ever met.” ~Sirius Black

I loved this! Some of these cats I still need to meet but I love animal side kicks in books, I always have. They really do add just a bit more to a story don’t they?

  2.

Spot on with this write-up, I seriously feel this web site
needs a great deal more attention. I’ll probably be
back again to see more, thanks for the advice!

LOL I have forgotten how amazing cats we have meet. I totally agree about Church! This is even how I imagine him. My favorite is Cheshire Cat and We’re all mad here is a really great quote. Great post 🙂

I totally did not realise there were so many famous cats, I have to admit personally I am much more of a dog person, but Mogget in the Abhorsen trilogy I totally forgot about, I loved his snark and wit in that trilogy.
The Cheshire Cat is also a fellow that I came to absolutely love.
This is a great post! 🙂

I always think of Salem on the show Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I want a talking kitty friend. Or teddy bear. Remember the one in A.I.?

I did love the cat in Coraline too though.

hahaha So many awesome felines in literature. Crookshanks was a whole bunch of fun. I especially loved Grimalkin from The Iron Fey series. 🙂

  9.

Haha, so true. I spend a good amount of time looking at cat GIFs and pics myself, but even more so on Cat Day. 🙂 There are some here I’ve never met, though, and that’s just a travesty. I will have to remedy that immediately.
