Let Me Go
by 3 Doors Down

Katherina B. submitted this amazing submission for a bookjam:

“I love listening to music, but I’m not one of those people to HAVE to be listening to music 24/7 or such thing. I also have, at least I like to think, an interesting taste to music. I like bands such as The Killers, Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, Postal Service, HelloGoodbye, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, Motion City Soundtrack, Josh Groban, Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenoweth, and the like.

I have been reading the “Matched” series by Ally Condie–I mean I JUST got down reading “Crossed”–and I like listening to music while reading, and in doing so (ESPECIALLY while reading this series) I couldn’t help but think, “Are all the songs that I love going to be destroyed by this (fictitious) totalitarian government?” Because as anyone who has read these books will attest to, out of all the history of music, which is rich, only 100 songs survive. So, will the classics-like Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Bach, etc-be the only ones living on, or will (our) modern music-Green Day, Josh Groban, Katy Perry, Lighthouse, The Beatles, etc-be in the mix also? I hardly think so. I believe this because of the underlying messages of the lyrics in songs. Messages like ‘fight for what you believe’, ‘you have choices’, etc. which any government in any dystopian novel(s) doesn’t want their citizens to have at their disposal.

Depending on which theme of the totalitarian government you want to focus on, you’ll probably be able to find a song to go with (or against) it. Take ‘Let Me Go’ by 3 Doors Down, it’s perfectly embodies how Ky feels about Cassia. I mean just look at the lyrics:

One more kiss could be the best thing
But one more lie could be the worst
And all these thoughts are never resting
And you’re not something I deserve

In my head there’s only you now
This world falls on me
In this world there’s real and make believe
And this seems real to me

You love me but you don’t know who I am
I’m torn between this life I lead and where I stand
And you love me but you don’t know who I am
So let me go
Let me go

I dream ahead to what I hope for
And I turn my back on loving you
How can this love be a good thing
When I know what I’m goin through

In my head there’s only you now
This world falls on me
In this world there’s real and make believe
And this seems real to me

You love me but you don’t know who I am
I’m torn between this life I lead and where I stand
You love me but you don’t know who I am
So let me go
Just Let me go…
Let me go

And no matter how hard I try
I can’t escape these things inside I know
I knowww..
When all the pieces fall apart
You will be the only one who knows
Who knows

You love me but you don’t know who I am
I’m torn between this life I lead and where I stand
And you love me but you don’t know Who I am
So let me go
Just let me go

And you love me but you don’t
You love me but you don’t
You love me but you don’t know who I am
And you love me but you don’t
You love me but you don’t
You love me but you don’t know me

He loves Cassia, and she loves him in return, but with his Classification as an Aberration and Cassia being a full Citizen, it was never suppose to be. So every time they kiss one another, it’s beautiful and to them it seems that they can go on stealing time they want from the Society but at the same time they still have to lie and keep secrets from one another–to keep the other safe (though more on Ky’s part than on Cassia’s). They both know that it’s better to let each other go, but they both dream of a world that has choices, and in that dream world they both would choose each other. I mean Ky even tells Cassia his story, in pieces, but there are things she still doesn’t know about him which perfectly correlates to the “You love me but you don’t know who I am” lines of the song! The lyrics in this song seems to portray that the singer is torn with the love he has for someone; and this, to me, is how Ky feels about the deep love he has for her. And can you blame him? Of course not! Cassia is a strong girl, who is throwing away a life she knew; a future that she, at one point, wanted–including love–for the uncertain, unknown and the wildness that is Ky and the world he embodies–the Rising!!”
