In Grave Mercy, Ismae and Gavriel work well together—though they are not always entirely trusting of one another—to protect the Duchess from power-hungry usurpers. For Gavriel’s part, he does it out of a brother’s love for the Duchess; for Ismae it is out of duty to Brittany and Mortain, the god of death whom she faithfully serves. Though neither are looking for love, they can’t help the way they feel about each other. And as it turns out, Ismae’s love might be Gavriel’s only chance at salvation from certain death.
