In Bloodlines, Sydney Sage gets asked by many human students at her new private school about her golden alchemical face tattoo that is visible in certain light. She finds out human students have been getting alchemist-like tattoos called “celestials” for a wide range of uses. Jocks use them to increase strength on the playing field, and other students use them for the addictive high they impart. Humans are strictly forbidden to use these, and what’s more, they shouldn’t know how to make them. Sydney knows an alchemist must be behind the tattoo operation, but she has to find proof first.
