This could be the theme song for Paolo Bacigalupi’s Ship Breaker. Nailer is living a hardscrabble, impoverished existence in a future Gulf Coast where rising tides have left the cities of today underwater. He spends his days scrapping for spare parts from oil tankers to “make quota” and survive, all while trying to steer clear of his abusive father. He has dreams to get free from his brutal life, but it feels impossible to get a break in a world where government is absent, gangs rule all, and people ruthlessly scavenge and steal from each other. Nailer has a chance to put his own humanity to the test when he comes across a girl in a shipwrecked clipper ship, clinging to life. He could kill her or leave her for dead and rob her, or he could help her and change his destiny.
