There are some truly spine-tingling scenes in UNBREAKABLE (the well scene in particular gave me nightmares!) Is there any moment in the book where you creeped yourself out as you were writing it?
The weird thing is that writing creepy scenes doesn’t scare me, but I can’t watch horror movies without having nightmares. And if I want to read a scary book, I have to read it during the day. I agree with you on the well scene, though. If I read that, and I hadn’t written it, I would’ve been creeped out, too.
I love how many ghostly myths and legends are woven into the story. What is your favorite story/superstition from the book?
I don’t want to give too much away, but grave jumping is an interesting one. Lots of cultures have a variation of that superstition. That said, I believe a surprising amount of what is in the book because I’m not only superstitious, but I embrace the superstitions of all cultures.
If you had to spend the night alone in an abandoned insane asylum that was rumored to be haunted, what are three Legion approved tools you would want with you?
A bottle of rock salt; one of Priest’s modified paintball guns; and paintball casings filled with cloves, rock salt, and holy water.
It’s not hard to see why a girl would fall for both Jared and Lukas, even though their personalities are completely different. This might be an impossible question, but which guy was your favorite to write?
It is a hard question, because there are things about both of them that I love. Lukas is more extroverted, which can fool people into believing he’s an open book, but he has secrets and inner demons just like the rest of us. Jared doesn’t share his inner demons with anyone, but you know he has them. What interests me most is their backstories—the things you find out about them a little at a time along with Kennedy – the music they love, their fears, and what haunts them. Those are the things that define a person, and a character.
Are there any characteristics you share with your characters in UNBREAKABLE, like Kennedy’s artistic talents, Alara’s fear of pink or Priest’s gadget savviness, etc.?
If I had to choose, I’m probably a cross between Alara and Jared. Alara is superstitious, but also has a deep respect for the beliefs and religion of her ancestors. She is also tough, but there’s a reason for it, even if it takes a while to find out exactly what it is. Jared keeps his feelings to himself, and he has a very black and white sense of morality. When I was a teen, I definitely wasn’t as brave as Kennedy has to be in Unbreakable. One thing Kennedy and I do have in common is art. I started out as a Fine Arts major in college, I was and a painter for years. My favorite painting, “Lady Day” by Chris Berens, just happens to be her favorite, too. Lukas shares my love of Tetris and a strong sense of loyalty.
Priest is the character who is the most different from me. In the novel, his specialty is designing the ghost hunting weapons the Legion uses. I have zero mathematical abilities, and I can barely follow directions well enough to assemble a piece of furniture. There’s no way I could solder and weld different weapons and household items together the way Priest does. But I did learn how to make a metal detector out of a calculator, a transistor radio, and duct tape. My characters in Unbreakable and I all share one thing, though—my taste in music.
UNBREAKABLE ends on such an exciting note, and now I’m dying to read the sequel! Could you give us any hints about what we can expect in book two?
I can promise you one thing: Whatever you think is going to happen, probably isn’t going to be what happens. One of the things I love most as a reader is the unexpected, as long as the twists feel like they were woven into the plot. I’m finishing Book 2 now, and it’s definitely more intense. There’s more suspense and more romance. Readers will also get the answers to a lot of questions in Unbreakable.
Like so many Beautiful Creatures fans, I was ecstatic when I heard that you and Margaret are going to be releasing a spinoff series, DANGEROUS CREATURES. Will you still have time to continue Kennedy and the gang’s story while you work on the new Link and Ridley series? As a writer how do you juggle multiple series storylines and writing schedules—do you own a time-turner or other magical device that allows for such feats?
Margie and I are finishing up the first Dangerous Creatures right now, and I’m also finishing the first draft of Book 2 in the Legion Series, so I’m definitely not pushing the Legion aside for the spin-off. Margie and I mapped out our schedules carefully, with each other and our editors, to make sure we had the time we needed to write our respective solo series and the novels and e-novellas for the Beautiful Creatures spin-off. Right now, a lot of things are overlapping, and I actually have zero free time. There are moments as a writer, like in any job, when you have to work harder. I don’t own a time-turner, but if Hermione is lending hers out, sign me up.
I never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me. When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. She doesn’t know that paranormal forces in a much darker world are the ones pulling the strings. Not until identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into Kennedy’s room and destroy a dangerous spirit sent to kill her. The brothers reveal that her mother was part of an ancient secret society responsible for protecting the world from a vengeful demon — a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night. Now Kennedy has to take her mother’s place in the Legion if she wants to uncover the truth and stay alive. Along with new Legion members Priest and Alara, the teens race to find the only weapon that might be able to destroy the demon — battling the deadly spirits he controls every step of the way.\ Suspense, romance, and the paranormal meet in this chilling urban fantasy, the first book in a new series from Kami Garcia, bestselling coauthor of the Beautiful Creatures novels.
