Julia Karr, author of XVI and Truth
Welcome to the Author Corner!
Category: Author InterviewToday we’re chatting with the lovely Julia Karr, author of TRUTH.
Truth follows Nina Oberon, her sister Dee, and her friends through even more nail-biting danger and government cover-ups, in the same frightening, thought-provoking dystopian world she introduced in XVI.
1) I have to say, I wouldn’t want to be a lower tier girl in any of your books! It seems like Nina and Dee can never catch a break; they are always being harassed or disenfranchised in some way. Of all of the terrifying threats to a lower tier girl in Nina’s world, which do you view as the most dangerous?
I think the worst threat is that whatever happens to them (assault, rape, whatever it might be) they will not be believed that they didn’t want and/or invite the attack.
2) Are there any real life news stories or people that inspired any of the plot elements in TRUTH?
Not anything or anyone in particular.
3) Who do you think the biggest villain is in XVI/Truth?
The Media / Government. The way they can spin the truth to their own advantage and make what’s wrong seem right is frightening.
4) Do you think your vision of the future could ever happen? If so, would you have the courage to be on the NonCon side of society? How do you think you could most effectively fight against the GC?
Unfortunately, I do think that certain parts of XVI/Truth‘s future is already here. I would like to think I’d have the courage to be a NonCon – I certainly would be a Resistance sympathizer. And… I think my writing would be my most effective weapon!
5) If you had to play casting agent for a movie adaptation of this series, who would you cast as Nina, Sal, Wei, Dee, and Chris?
This is tough. Hailee Steinfeld as Nina, Drew Roy as Sal, Brenda Song as Wei, Kiernan Shipka as Dee, and Jackson Rathbone as Chris.
6) What’s your favorite dystopian novel?
Right now it’s kind of a toss-up between Memento Nora by Angie Smibert and Possession by Elana Johnson. I’m really looking forward to the sequels of both!
7) Truth ends on an exciting note—I can’t wait to see what’s next for Nina. Can you give us any hints about what to expect in Book 3?
Not really.
We had to try!
8) Do you have any post-XVI series plans?
I’m working on a couple of different novels right now. One is sci-fi and the other is contemporary.
Very exciting! I can’t wait to read what’s next. Thanks for stopping by!
About Truth
Nina Oberon’s life has changed enormously in the last few months. When her mother was killed, Nina discovered the truth about her father, the leader of the Resistance. And now she sports the same Governing Council–ordered tattoo of XVI on her wrist that all sixteen-year-old girls have. The one that announces to the world that she is easy prey to predators. But Nina won’t be anyone’s stereotype. And when she joins an organization of girls working within the Resistance, she knows that they can put an end to one of the most terrifying secret programs the GC has ever conceived.
Because the truth always comes out…and the consequences can be deadly.
About Julia Karr
Julia Karr was born in Indiana, and moved to Chicago when she was fifteen. After the initial culture shock of going from quiet, small town living to Carl Sandburg’s, “stormy, husky, brawling,” metropolis, she fell madly in love with the city. Her schooling in the art of writing came from reading, voraciously. While students were being forced to read the classics, Julia was busy going on author binges. As a young mother, reading books to, and eventually with, her daughters, she fell head-over-heels for children’s literature. Not a far stretch for someone who had loved reading since the age of three. While still working a nine-to-five job, after hours Julia can be found at home, sitting on the couch tapping out stories on her laptop, with one of several cats draped behind her and her dogs sleeping nearby.
