Countdown Blog Tour: Interview with Michelle Rowen
Welcome to the Countdown Blog Tour, hosted by the fabulous team over at Kismet Book Tours. We are absolutely thrilled to have Michelle Rowen, author of the fabulous Nightwatchers series, stopping by today for an interview to discuss Countdown, her thrilling new dystopian! It’s a thrill ride from start to finish that fans of The Hunger Games and Divergent will love.
Kira and Rogan face some absolutely terrifying scenarios in Countdown. Without giving too much away, can you tell us or hint at what the most intense moment was for you to write?
There’s one very intense scene that involves a fear of heights mixed with some major, earth-shattering revelations that my heroine Kira needs to deal with all at once. There are a lot of scenes in this book where the emotions are jacked up to an eleven, which is definitely draining as a writer, but hopefully exciting for the reader!
If you woke up and found yourself on Countdown, what’s the first thing you would do?
Hope I was still dreaming! LOL. I’m not sure what I’d do other than try to bargain for my release. However, since Countdown typically uses criminals as their contestants and very rarely any women, I feel fairly safe that I won’t get selected to play any time soon.
You’ve written a lot of swoonworthy characters before, but Rogan just might be my favorite. *fans self* Kira also proves herself to be a brave and dauntless heroine. If you had to choose between them, who would you rather find yourself partnered with on Countdown?
Rogan’s pretty hot, I agree! But I think I’d have to pick Kira. She’s fast, snarky, wily, and is a true survivor, so I think she’s got the right stuff to be a great partner in tight situations like the ones in Countdown.
If Countdown were made into a movie, who would you cast as Kira, Rogan and Gareth?
Good question! Maybe Lily Collins for Kira, Nicholas Hoult for Rogan, and perhaps Russell Crowe for Gareth.
Since Countdown was originally published in 2008, did you make any major re-writes or changes to Kira and Rogan’s story?
The story is essentially the same with a few worldbuilding tweaks. In the original non-YA version, I had everyone vying to leave the dying Earth and get to “Offworld,” a new colony on a different planet. I’ve changed that to a domed city on Earth (taking things off the planet felt a bit too sci-fi to me in an otherwise grounded story with no spaceships flying around). I reduced the main characters’ ages so Kira is sixteen and Rogan is seventeen. And I tweaked some of the more adult language and situations – not to downplay anything especially for “YA,” but because those elements no longer felt organic to this revised version and these freshened up characters.
There are so many fascinating elements to this futuristic dystopian world, some exciting and some downright terrifying. What, if any, features of your fictional world do you see actually becoming a reality?
I suppose the fact that a plague wiped out a large percentage of the planet is something that lurks at the corners of our world at any given moment. A supervirus could do the same thing. After such a major catastrophe, the rebuilding would be shaky, cities would become ghost towns, and those still alive would have to focus on day to day survival as they do in the book. Let’s just hope this never happens!
Cranial implants to view and experience entertainment privately in our own minds rather than on a screen seems like something that could also happen one day for those interested in going that far.
I loved the ending, but I wanted to keep the story going for so much longer! Any chance we’ll get a Countdown sequel?
I agree, there could certainly be more story to tell but for now this is definitely a standalone novel. With so many series and trilogies out there to keep up with, I hope readers like the chance to read a story with a beginning, middle, and end. All in one book!
My pleasure. Thank you!
Once the countdown starts, it cannot be stopped.
2 PAWNS THROWN INTO A BRUTAL UNDERGROUND REALITY GAME.
Kira Jordan survived her family’s murder and months on plague-devastated city streets with hard-won savvy and a low-level psi ability. She figures she can handle anything. Until she wakes up in a barren room, chained next to the notorious Rogan Ellis.
1 REASON KIRA WIL NEVER, EVER TRUST ROGAN. EVEN THOUGH BOTH THEIR LIVES DEPEND ON IT.
Their every move is controlled and televised for a vicious exclusive audience. And as Kira’s psi skill unexpectedly grows and Rogan’s secrets prove ever more deadly, Kira’s only chance of survival is to risk trusting him as much as her instincts. Even if that means running head-on into the one trap she can’t escape.
