Tarot Card Tour Maggie Stiefvater

Today we’re excited to do a reading of THE EMPEROR:

The Emperor Tarot Card Maggie Stiefvater Blue Lily Lily Blue Blog tour

The Emperor is card number 4, and represents structure and authority.

It’s hard not to think of Glendower when we see this beautifully painted card with its crown and sword resting in a dark, cavernous space. It definitely looks like the resting place of a slumbering king.

The Emperor represents “the power of the mind to shape the world” (source) and “offers guidance, advice and wisdom to others and in doing so, demonstrates authority and grounding.” (source)

Given the role of leader and protector Gansey plays within his group of friends, we can’t help but apply this card reading to him as well. Gansey is mature beyond his years, and determined to prove he’s not just a privileged rich boy resting on his laurels. He wants to find Glendower because he has the resources and drive to do it, and because he feels a particular affinity with the Welsh king.

“Glendower was more than a historical figure to Gansey. He was everything Gansey wished he could be: wise and brave, sure of his path, touched by the supernatural, respected by all, survived by his legacy.” ~The Raven Boys

In The Raven Boys and The Dream Thieves, Glendower draws Gansey and his friends in with the promise of a granted wish and academic glory. While unable to physically lead and manipulate characters, his power and influence is strong even in slumber.

Gansey takes after Glendower in many ways, described by all who meet him as a supercharged, charismatic leader worthy of following anywhere.

“Boys like him didn’t die; they got bronzed and installed outside public libraries.” ~The Raven Boys

“Everything about him suggested valor and power and a firm handshake.” ~The Raven Boys

“Gansey could persuade even the sun to pause and give him the time.” ~The Dream Thieves

Gansey’s persuasive power to inspire his friends to take on his obsessive quest is astonishingly effective.

“When Gansey spoke, Adam saw the green swell of the Welsh foothills, the wide glistening surface of the River Dee, the unforgiving northern mountains that Glendower vanished into. In Gansey’s stories, Owain Glyndwr could never die.” ~The Raven Boys

The Emperor “has a privileged few who are subject to his protection always repay him with the loyalty and respect he deserves.” (source)

Gansey’s plays a father figure to his friends, feeling the need to protect Ronan from himself and to help Adam financially and emotionally to break away from his abusive home life. His desire to protect is so great it can sometimes be overbearing, particularly with Adam, who is too proud to accept charity from his friend.

In Blue Lily, Lily Blue Gansey continues to lead his friends in his quest to find Glendower, and we find out how he shields his weaknesses to be strong for his friends as we learn more about his past through Malory.

The Emperor “shows the benefits of structure and logic ruling over the emotions and lesser desires. Often, domination of the mind over the heart is not wanted, but in some cases is it necessary and even welcomed.” (source)

This struggle between mind and heart knows no greater expression than Gansey’s forbidden torturous flirtation with Blue, which could hurt Adam and upset the precarious peace and balance that has been restored to their group dynamic.

“Desire and dread lay right next to each other in his heart, each sharpening the other.” ~Blue Lily, Lily Blue

The Emperor “is able to create order out of chaos by carefully categorizing his thoughts and mapping out what needs to be done to solve the problem” and “brings security and comfort to those around him.” (source)

Gansey is ever focused on not just finding Glendower, but in protecting his friends, whether by righting the wrong of Noah’s death or by showing up to Adam’s court date unannounced. He is as devoted to his Raven Boys and Blue as he is to Glendower.

“When we find Glendower, I’m asking him to fix you. As the favor.”~Blue Lily, Lily Blue

“Now he could see that it wasn’t charity Gansey was offering. It was just truth. And something else: friendship of the unshakeable kind. Friendship you could swear on. That could be busted nearly to breaking and come back stronger than before.”~Blue Lily, Lily Blue

We’ve known from the first few pages of this series that Gansey is meant to die, and whether that is a physical, final death, or more of a spiritual journey / Glendower-style sleep remains to be seen.

“The Emperor can also personify the assumption of power and control, by you or someone close to you. If you are the one in power, take care that you always use it wisely.” (source)

We will definitely see strong expressions of power and leadership in the final book, though it might not come from just Gansey. A shift is happening, and Gansey’s friends are displaying innate powers that could prove more useful than his intellectual and emotional leadership in the final installment.

The Emperor “will listen to the counsel of others, though the final decision is always his.” (source)

If Gansey can trust in the growing power of Adam (The Magician) and Ronan’s ability to dream things into life, and work with Blue and the other psychic powers at 300 Fox Way, he might just conquer his fate and complete his quest to awaken Glendower.

The Emperor “takes what he has learned, and passes it on to the next generation, so someday they can be as wise and powerful as he is.” (source)

Regardless of Gansey’s fate, there is no doubt he and Glendower both will leave a lasting legacy in Henrietta and in these characters’ lives.

The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater

Mystery, Romance and the supernatural combine in this series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Maggie Stiefvater.

Book 1: The Raven Boys

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue never sees them–until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks to her. His name is Gansey, a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul whose emotions range from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She doesn’t believe in true love, and never thought this would be a problem. But as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

Book 2: The Dream Thieves

Now that the ley lines around Cabeswater have been woken, nothing for Ronan, Gansey, Blue, and Adam will be the same. Ronan, for one, is falling more and more deeply into his dreams, and his dreams are intruding more and more into waking life. Meanwhile, some very sinister people are looking for some of the same pieces of the Cabeswater puzzle that Gansey is after….

Book 3: Blue Lily, Lily Blue

There is danger in dreaming. But there is even more danger in waking up.

Blue Sargent has found things. For the first time in her life, she has friends she can trust, a group to which she can belong. The Raven Boys have taken her in as one of their own. Their problems have become hers, and her problems have become theirs.

The trick with found things though, is how easily they can be lost.

RONAN IN ALL IS HIS RONANISH GLORY! Although there were a few scenes in BLLB where Noah completely stole my heart and i must Adma is creeping pretty close to Ronan as well. I still love Blue and Gansey they are all just so perfect in their own way.

    Christina R.

Love him 🙂 He’s smart and kind and dedicated 🙂

thank you so very much 🙂

      Christina R.

Just in case rafflecopter shows a location outside US, I’m doing a semester abroad and would use my regular address:)

My favorite character is Chainsaw. I’m endlessly intrigued by both her origin & what she will become. I need to re-read bllb to understand the origin of another certain character, but Chainsaw is a pure gift from Cabeswater. She emerges as a newborn hatchling that Ronan does NOT make himself. He doesn’t ask for her, and he loves her like she really is his child. I have never believed that she’s a forgery, and I think she will be important to the final part of the story. (also, I can’t fathom why she calls Ronan “kerah”… which seems to mean “collar” in Indonesian)

    Meagan S.

While I love them all, I’d have to say Ronan. My son. God bless Ronan Lynch.

Blue Sargent is my ultimate TRC fav she’s so strong and ?? god i love her so much.

    Gansey’s my favorite 🙂

    M T

I lvoe them all so much its hard to choose, but after The Dream Thieves I just adore Ronan. He’s so complex and dark and deep and wonderful I can’t even explain it.

    Jessica G

Ronan has to be my favorite, though Adam’s character arc is the most fascinating to me, and I’ve dreamt of them both after reading the series. If Cabeswater were a character, it’d be in the running too…everyone in this series is just incredible.

I love all the characters so much, but Blue would have to be my favorite!

    Ysabella S

My favorite charater is Blue. As a young adult myself I feel as though I hold potential but I don’t know my purpose/use for it. With the unveiling of this charater throughout the novels, she gives me hope.

    Viki S.

Don’t really have one yet but Blue is edging the game.

    Blue, Blue, Blue.

Favorite? I’m supposed to have a favorite? Well, I am inspired by Gansey and Adam breaks my heart, Noah is a sweetheart, but if I was to pick a favorite, it would have to be either Ronan or Blue. I love Blue as a whole person, as someone who keeps getting revealed more and more. And Ronan is so sharp that it is hard not to fall in love with his pain and anger.

I love them all, but Ronan’s my favorite.

    Cleo s

I love gansey! he is the most complex and well written character in the best series of books on the planet.

I think Blue is my favorite character, I love how head strong she is but it is hard to resist all of her Raven Boys. 😉

I love this series and as much as I would like to say I am not fascinated about the cards, I am. I love how it is all incorporated in the story.

THIS IS AWESOME!!!! I love seeing all these cards! I have my post going up next week and got the Death card. I’m trying not to be unnerved by it 😉 I haven’t read Blue Lily yet, but I couldn’t be more excited to dive back into this world. Let’s hope Gansey’s death is not of the physical variety, but more along the Tarot lines and merely symbolic of change:)

Can’t wait to read your Death card post! Though I’m super nervous about it. I hope that card goes easy on Gansey! 🙂

I honestly love Calla. She’s spunky, but has a heart deep down. Deep, deep down.

I feel like Calla doesn’t get enough credit. She provides a different angle for understanding Ronan, and I think she’ll feature prominently in the next book.

I would definitely prefer this card for Gansey over the Death card…

Us too! 🙂 Fingers crossed that Gansey’s Death card takes a less literal meaning in the last book…

    Ashley White

    Ronan is my favorite!

Gansey! I love him! He’s so cute and smart and I love how he develops through the books!

Gansey! Or Ronan. Or Blue. Ugh, I can’t decide. I love them all! They’re all such wonderful, beautifully developed characters.

    Noah is my favorite character

Ronan is wonderful in all respects. But really I like all of the main characters!

    I love this line:

“Desire and dread lay right next to each other in his heart, each sharpening the other.” ~Blue Lily, Lily Blue

What an amazing example of third person writing!

    Indrani K.

I love them all in different ways but Blue’s a queen, so.

I can’t choose between Gansey and Ronan.

My favorite character is Gansey, but man oh man do I love me some Gray Man. ♥♥♥

Still reading Blue Lily, Lily Blue. Can’t wait to see where it leads.

Richard Campbell Gansey III, I’ve slowly accepted that boat shoes only make me like a person more.

Ronan is my favorite without a doubt.

Adam and Ronan. Ronan and Adam.

    Breana M.

All of them. I can’t just pick one.

I think Gansey is my favorite character, because (really shallow reason) he reminds me of my boyfriend. I like his nobility, even if it is sometimes accompanied by condescension.

I love Maggie’s writing and I love her artwork. This is an awesome giveaway.

Favorite character is DEFINITELY Ronan. I just… have way too many Ronan feels. WAY TOO MANY. <3333

Gansey! I mean, who doesn’t like him?

My phone autocorrects his name to all caps. It can’t help itself.

The Raven Cycle is my favorite series! I can’t wait to read Blue Lily Lily Blue! In the mean time, I love seeing the beautiful tarot cards on this tour!

Noah is my favorite character! I think his awkwardness is adorable!

    Nancy L.R.

Okay, I love quite a few characters, but my favorite will have to be Noah! I specially love the Noah and Blue moments! Also, Ronan. Ugh, I can’t pick just one!

Still waiting for my copy of BLLB. Can’t wait to read it!

It SHOULD be Ronan based on my past book loves, but somehow it’s totally Gansey this time.

It’s hard to pick a favorite character because I love the whole ensemble. If I have to pick one, it has to be Blue. She’s so smart, and doesn’t put up with any BS she gets from the guys.

It’s impossible to pick one favorite character! Ronan because he has Chainsaw, Blue, and Gainsey are probably tied.

My friends and I all scream/cry at each other about Ronan. For example, my phone now autocorrects to “RONAN ;_______; ”

In reality, I love pretty much everyone. The Blue/Gansey pairing makes me want to weep. I love Calla and the Gray Man. I love Persephone. I LOVE JESSIE DITLEY. I just have a lot of love, okay?

I like your phone, it GETS it. 🙂

My phone totally know what’s up.

I even, begrudgingly, started to kind of like Adam when I read Blue Lily. This is not a small thing.

Oh Blue and Ronan are my fave characters. Love her artwork!

Ronan! Blue! Gansey! The Gray Man! Stop asking these questions. How can anyone hope to answer?

Gosh I love this series I am so eager to continue. I hope Gansey doesnt die. I think my fav character is Adam 🙂

I always wanted to try tarot cards

I love Ronan. I really love Ronan. And these cards. Would love them too.

    Amanda T

    Clarisa Ramirez

Favorite RAVEN CYCLE character has to be Ronan, Adam, and Grey Man!

    Definitely Ronan Lynch!

My favorite character is probably Gansey…but Blue is a close second!

I have not read these books yet, but my feature co-host has convinced me that I need them in my life. Therefore, I really can’t say which one is my favorite (although I do love the silhouette on Blue Lily Lily Blue, and tend to prefer female MCs). So, between needing the books to devour, and collecting tarot cards as a hobby, this giveaway contest is perfection to me! Thank-you for the oppourtunity to win this stellar prize package. 🙂

    Favorite character is definitely Ronan.

Noah! He took that window like a CHAMP!

    GANSEY! every.single.version.

    Skov is my favorite!

My favorite character would definitely be Blue. She is a very unique, strong character and that is rare in YA Fiction and Fantasy.

    Cristina Escalante

I love all of them, specially Gansey and Blue…Blunsey!

obviously my favorite character is the two headed albino raven monster who else is there to like lmao

Omg so far the book is so good!!!

Favorite character… I can’t decide but I do really love Ronan

i’m not sure I can pick a favourite… but if I HAD to, I like Gansey a fair bit. He’s kinda dorky for a super handsome rich boy whos obsessed with a dead welsh king.

Oh, man, THAT is a question. I think Gansey finally edged a bit ahead of Ronan after BLLB, but then there’s smudgy Noah. Can they all count as one?

    Clarissa S

I have to say that I have a soft spot for Adam. I really truly understand him. We share some experiences…and although he handles some things in the wrong at times, I can feel how hard he is trying…argh he just breaks me heart!

Is it weird that my favorite Raven Boy is Noah? I just wish we knew more about him, other than in the context of him being dead. But he’s funny and adorable and dedicated to his friends, also glitter.

The number one reason I love this series is that there’s equally more than one main character. Reading The Raven Boys made me think Blue is the main character, but her and all the boys have equal parts. I’ve never seen this done before, and Maggie Stiefvater does it well. I’m a librarian at a small-town public library, and I promote this series anytime someone will listen.

    Michelle C

It changes with every book but Noah is my favorite this time. He breaks my heart!

    Cina Li

    Ronan Lynch. No question.

    Jacklin Updegraft

I love Blue and Gansey!!! They are my favorite characters in this whole series!

Blue because she is such a feminist and quirky and accepts that she is not like any other girls. She is also very original and not afraid to speak what she thinks! .

I think I’d choose Adam, I have a thing for underdogs and I can’t help but like him.

Ronan. Easily. Especially after Dream Thieves.

    Gansey for sure

Oh god I love them all but probably Gansey or Blue! I still can’t choose!

Just one character? Seriously? I don’t know that I can pick just one. Possibly Gansey, but at the moment I’m thinking Ronan. But I love them all, really.

    Alison Meredith

GANSEY, but I did miss Ronan’s POV in BLLB

    Cynthia Tallón García

First of all, english is not my mother tongue, so I apologize if I don’t use it well or if I don’t explain clearly.
It’s quite difficult to choose. I like (almost) all the characters in The Raven Cycle; I think they are well built. But if I have to choose, I choose Ronan and the psychics, especially Maura and Persephone.
Ronan is unpredictable, and he really surprised me in The Dream Thieves. I think his psychological background is very interesting and I love discovering new things about him.
And Maura and Persephone. First, I love anything that has to do with clairvoyance, esotericism, tarot, scrying… I’ve loved that stuff since… always. So it was easy for me to fall in love with all of them. Why Maura and Persephone?
I think both are mysterious in their own way. Maura has a past. A past that we don’t know yet and I think I am not mistaken when I say that Maura is hiding something big. I feel there is much of it that we have not seen and that we have to wait to see. Plus, like my mother she is a single mother, and that’s very remarkable; strong and protective, but always giving to her daughter the freedom to be what she want. She is great example of mother I have to say.
And Persephone. Oh, she’s so lovely. And ethereal. Enigmatic. And she has magic everywhere. I simply adore her. In every way. And I think she has a great potential/power and that we can expect a lot of things coming from her. Besides, I feel like she (and Maura too) has a strange connection/bond to Cabeswater.

So excited about the latest title by this fantastic author! How DOES she have time for writing, AND art, kids and cars? AMAZING!

They’re all pretty great, but I’ve got to go with Gansey.

    Alex U.

My favorite character is Ronan Lynch and then it’s a tie between Blue & Gansey!

Thank you for participating in this giveaway!!

I like Blue. She is so independent and comes alive off the page.

There are too many amazing characters to choose from…but I think I’d have to say either Ronan or Noah (or Gansey, Adam, Blue, Kavinsky, etc.) but really I love the way they are such great friends and the interaction between Ronan and Noah. It’s so amazing because Ronan is all sharp edges and Noah is so soft but the two of them in BLLB = <33333

Ronan is definitely my favorite Raven Cycle character!! He’s just brilliant and just amazing 🙂

    Gansey, Gansey, Gansey.

It’s really hard for me to choose a favorite character! Chainsaw? Ronan!!! I also love Mr. Grey. AND I love the new character introduced in Blue Lily, Lily Blue. I can’t choose just ONE!

This is a comment I’m commenting because I’m excited for the giveaway!

Also what I really like character-wise is that all of the characters are so real.
And I do really like Piper.

Gansey. There’s something about characters who are so unabashedly passionate about something.

    Morgan Crowl

My favorite character? Are you TRYING TO KILL ME? Picking a favorite character from this series is like picking a favorite child. How do you expect me to do this? Since this is forced, and clearly a cruel and unusual punishment…. I would have to go with Ronan. He is so fiercely loyal. And he loves so hard, and so deeply. Even if he does cover it up with his attitude. He loves his friends, and Matthew so much. Like Blue says, he is one of those people that you’d want to impress. Because to not be on his team, would be devastating.

Then Ronan. God I love Ronan!!! 😀 he he, he’s so funny! 😀 And I just generally love him and how he’s grown.
And then I’d probably say Calla or Persephone. ^_^
    And Blue’s a given
well, there are a list of my favourites. Even though it’s basically half the cast of The Raven Cycle.

I love Blue, even though I love all the characters. They’re all real, down to earth and totally relate-able. They have flaws, hopes, dreams. Very 3D!

Oh, this is impossible. I really do not have one favorite. When I am recommending this book to people, I tell them that all the characters are very real and flawed and amazing, but I would not like to be best friends with any of them. I think this mostly sums up my feelings

    Michelle Chang

This is the hardest question you could ever ask a Raven Boys fan. INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT but I have to choose Ronan. He’s the flippin’ Greywaren for crying out loud. And I like how he has a broken background.

    Esther S

first of all, how dare you? you might as well ask me to decide which one of my children is my favorite. spoiler: I don’t have children. or favorites! wait that’s a lie. it’s more that I have a lot of favorites. for many reasons. I feel protective of them. I feel so so protective of those boys and blue, among others. even the gray man. I feel protective of the hit man. honestly. I need to get a grip.

Whoever says Ronan is seriously silly since a character like Adam exists. Even Adam didn’t exist, who doesn’t Gansey?

NOAH!! He is just so precious and sweet and I want him safe and happy.

    Aimee Nelson

This is such a hard question because I’ve only read the first book so far, so with that I would have to say Gansey!

I honestly love all the characters so this is a hard question to respond to; but ultimately, if I had to choose a favorite, I just love Gansey the most! The rest of the boys and Blue are outstanding, all the new characters and the side characters are so awesome, but I’ve had a love for Gansey since the first book. Although I DO have a soft spot in my heart for Noah.

Adam is hands down my fave from book 1. Ronan after book 2 is a close second and their camradarie in book 3 and scenes with just them was great! Adam because I can relate to him on so many levels in terms of his pride and desire to BE better and that inner simmering anger that can make you so damn proud that it’s hard to ask for help. Adore him.

Definitely Ronan, by far one of the most dynamic characters I have ever read.

This tarot tour was such a great idea! I love all the cards so much. I think your analysis of The Emperor & Gansey is spot on. Nice job!

    I just adore Noah!

    ALL OF THEM. Period. 🙂

My fave TRC character ? Tie between Gansey and Adam. Right now it’s probably Adam, but ugh it’s hard to pick just one.

    Ahhhhh I cannot choose!!!!!!!!!

My favorite character is probably Blue. I just really like her and her family. I think they’re a really interesting concept.

It is so hard to choose a favorite character in this series! They are all amazing and I love them. I think right at this moment my favorite character is Gansey. If you asked me tomorrow the answer might be different!

    Daniel M

haven’t read any yet so no fav yet

I haven’t read this series yet but I love that there’s a tarot deck to go with, that’s just awesome!

I haven’t read the books yet but i feel like I will just fall in love with Gansey 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway! Fingers crossed.

    Crystal D

    My favorite character is Calla!

    I don’t know, I haven’t read the series yet.

I haven’t read the series yet, so I’ve no idea.

    Robert Dix

    Janellie Berlanga

My favorite character is Gansey, I love his prince-like charm and the fact that he smells like mint

    Sharnee Rawson

*Frets* Perhaps… Kavinsky? I’m not sure why exactly I love him so much. He’s adorable? He’s clearly insane? He has a (probably) more than bro crush on Ronan and their relationship (however you define it) is adorable and weird and just the bracelets and the cars and adorably taking drugs together (okay that sounded slightly strange) and and and *collapses on bed mumbling spoilers and crying*

    Josy Herrera

    Ronan. End of. 😀

I haven’t started the series yet, so no fav character, but I cannot wait to get to know them all!
