Today we’re excited to do a reading of THE EMPEROR:
The Emperor is card number 4, and represents structure and authority.
It’s hard not to think of Glendower when we see this beautifully painted card with its crown and sword resting in a dark, cavernous space. It definitely looks like the resting place of a slumbering king.
Given the role of leader and protector Gansey plays within his group of friends, we can’t help but apply this card reading to him as well. Gansey is mature beyond his years, and determined to prove he’s not just a privileged rich boy resting on his laurels. He wants to find Glendower because he has the resources and drive to do it, and because he feels a particular affinity with the Welsh king.
“Glendower was more than a historical figure to Gansey. He was everything Gansey wished he could be: wise and brave, sure of his path, touched by the supernatural, respected by all, survived by his legacy.” ~The Raven Boys
In The Raven Boys and The Dream Thieves, Glendower draws Gansey and his friends in with the promise of a granted wish and academic glory. While unable to physically lead and manipulate characters, his power and influence is strong even in slumber.
Gansey takes after Glendower in many ways, described by all who meet him as a supercharged, charismatic leader worthy of following anywhere.
“Boys like him didn’t die; they got bronzed and installed outside public libraries.” ~The Raven Boys
“Everything about him suggested valor and power and a firm handshake.” ~The Raven Boys
“Gansey could persuade even the sun to pause and give him the time.” ~The Dream Thieves
Gansey’s persuasive power to inspire his friends to take on his obsessive quest is astonishingly effective.
“When Gansey spoke, Adam saw the green swell of the Welsh foothills, the wide glistening surface of the River Dee, the unforgiving northern mountains that Glendower vanished into. In Gansey’s stories, Owain Glyndwr could never die.” ~The Raven Boys
The Emperor “has a privileged few who are subject to his protection always repay him with the loyalty and respect he deserves.” (source)
Gansey’s plays a father figure to his friends, feeling the need to protect Ronan from himself and to help Adam financially and emotionally to break away from his abusive home life. His desire to protect is so great it can sometimes be overbearing, particularly with Adam, who is too proud to accept charity from his friend.
In Blue Lily, Lily Blue Gansey continues to lead his friends in his quest to find Glendower, and we find out how he shields his weaknesses to be strong for his friends as we learn more about his past through Malory.
The Emperor “shows the benefits of structure and logic ruling over the emotions and lesser desires. Often, domination of the mind over the heart is not wanted, but in some cases is it necessary and even welcomed.” (source)
This struggle between mind and heart knows no greater expression than Gansey’s forbidden torturous flirtation with Blue, which could hurt Adam and upset the precarious peace and balance that has been restored to their group dynamic.
“Desire and dread lay right next to each other in his heart, each sharpening the other.” ~Blue Lily, Lily Blue
The Emperor “is able to create order out of chaos by carefully categorizing his thoughts and mapping out what needs to be done to solve the problem” and “brings security and comfort to those around him.” (source)
Gansey is ever focused on not just finding Glendower, but in protecting his friends, whether by righting the wrong of Noah’s death or by showing up to Adam’s court date unannounced. He is as devoted to his Raven Boys and Blue as he is to Glendower.
“When we find Glendower, I’m asking him to fix you. As the favor.”~Blue Lily, Lily Blue
“Now he could see that it wasn’t charity Gansey was offering. It was just truth. And something else: friendship of the unshakeable kind. Friendship you could swear on. That could be busted nearly to breaking and come back stronger than before.”~Blue Lily, Lily Blue
We’ve known from the first few pages of this series that Gansey is meant to die, and whether that is a physical, final death, or more of a spiritual journey / Glendower-style sleep remains to be seen.
“The Emperor can also personify the assumption of power and control, by you or someone close to you. If you are the one in power, take care that you always use it wisely.” (source)
We will definitely see strong expressions of power and leadership in the final book, though it might not come from just Gansey. A shift is happening, and Gansey’s friends are displaying innate powers that could prove more useful than his intellectual and emotional leadership in the final installment.
The Emperor “will listen to the counsel of others, though the final decision is always his.” (source)
If Gansey can trust in the growing power of Adam (The Magician) and Ronan’s ability to dream things into life, and work with Blue and the other psychic powers at 300 Fox Way, he might just conquer his fate and complete his quest to awaken Glendower.
The Emperor “takes what he has learned, and passes it on to the next generation, so someday they can be as wise and powerful as he is.” (source)
Regardless of Gansey’s fate, there is no doubt he and Glendower both will leave a lasting legacy in Henrietta and in these characters’ lives.
ABOUT THE RAVEN CYCLE:
Mystery, Romance and the supernatural combine in this series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Maggie Stiefvater.
Book 1: The Raven Boys
Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue never sees them–until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks to her. His name is Gansey, a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.
But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul whose emotions range from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher who notices many things but says very little.
For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She doesn’t believe in true love, and never thought this would be a problem. But as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.
Book 2: The Dream Thieves
Now that the ley lines around Cabeswater have been woken, nothing for Ronan, Gansey, Blue, and Adam will be the same. Ronan, for one, is falling more and more deeply into his dreams, and his dreams are intruding more and more into waking life. Meanwhile, some very sinister people are looking for some of the same pieces of the Cabeswater puzzle that Gansey is after….
Book 3: Blue Lily, Lily Blue
There is danger in dreaming. But there is even more danger in waking up.
Blue Sargent has found things. For the first time in her life, she has friends she can trust, a group to which she can belong. The Raven Boys have taken her in as one of their own. Their problems have become hers, and her problems have become theirs.
The trick with found things though, is how easily they can be lost.
