Amazon announced that The Hunger Games trilogy has outsold the Harry Potter series, making it the best-selling book series of all time on Amazon.com. These sales figures combine both print and Kindle book sales.

Sara Nelson, Editorial Director of Books and Kindle, Amazon.com says of this de-throning, “Interestingly, this series is only three books versus Harry Potter’s seven, and to achieve this result in just four years is a great testament to both the popularity of the work and, we think, the growth in reading digitally during that time. Customers love these books and all three titles are consistently on our Top 10 lists in both print and Kindle formats, and The Hunger Games is also the most-borrowed book in the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.”

(Side note: The Hunger Games cleaned up in DVD sales this past weekend too—big shocker, right?)

If you’re a fan of both series, this may leave you feeling a bit conflicted. Do you cheer this news? Or cry yourself to sleep on your Ravenclaw pillowcase?

Why not cheer? It’s just further proof that the mega top-of-the-charts best-selling YA series is no longer an outlier. The more success and money YA series claim in the book world, the more writers will try to write quality YA books. And that is a very good thing for YA readers.

In the meantime, let’s celebrate BOTH series’ monster successes with our favorite Harry Potter/Hunger Games mashup from earlier this year.
