Elle Fanning Takes the Lead in Olive’s Ocean

Elle Fanning will star in the film adaptation of Kevin Henkes’s Newbery Honor-winning book, Olive’s Ocean.
She’ll play Martha, a girl who learns after her classmate Olive’s death that the the girl had hoped to become friends with her. Martha visits her grandmother’s house near the ocean, something Olive had always wanted to see, for a summer of soul searching and rumination.
Donald Rosenfeld, Andreas Roald and Celestia Fox will produce the film, with Christina Hammonds Reed adapting the book for the screen.
The adaptation came about when Rosenfeld, while working on a film with Dakota, Elle’s sister, asked Elle what her favorite book was, and she answered with Olive’s Ocean. Now that’s putting your star power to good use! (Um, Elle, maybe you want to mention that you reeeeeally like Code Name Verity while you have this guy’s ear?)

I’ve never read this! It sounds pretty good. I can’t believe she just lists her favorite book and she gets a movie made. How bout Jellicoe Road!
