This trailer for The Diviners starts out with some delightful twenties lingo and a good-ole-days vintage feel, and quickly graduates to a pee-your-pants horror movie, complete with a super sinister lullaby (aka horror movie gold).

Clearly this series is going to be more like Libba’s Gemma Doyle series—period occult creepiness that is both addicting and goosebump-making.

About The Diviners:

The Diviners by Libba Bray

Evie O’Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City—and she is pos-i-toot-ly thrilled. New York is the city of speakeasies, shopping, and movie palaces! Soon enough, Evie is running with glamorous Ziegfield girls and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is Evie has to live with her Uncle Will, curator of The Museum of American Folklore, Superstition, and the Occult—also known as “The Museum of the Creepy Crawlies.”

When a rash of occult-based murders comes to light, Evie and her uncle are right in the thick of the investigation. And through it all, Evie has a secret: a mysterious power that could help catch the killer—if he doesn’t catch her first.

This trailer was so well done it was chilling enough so that I know The Diviners would not be a book I could read. It would spook me too much, but for someone who truly enjoys this genre I’m sure it would be a thrill.

I know what you mean Lynn! I love Libba and her writing so much, but Rebel Angels and The Sweet Far Thing scared the crap out of me. I still shudder when I think about that mummer scene and that last scene with Pippa in SFT.

I may have to stick with Libba’s comedies. But for those who do like this genre, she is guaranteed going to scare you.
