Moonrise Kingdom: A Look Inside the Beautiful YA Books

If you haven’t seen Moonrise Kingdom by Wes Anderson, make haste to your nearest theater! It is a beautiful, charming tale of two misfits—Suzy and Sam—who run away from their disappointing 12 year old lives seeking friendship and adventure on a secluded New England island.

If the premise isn’t enough to get your butt in a movie theater seat, perhaps taking a peek inside the suitcase of an epic bookaholic Suzy (who steals library books with the intent of “maybe someday” returning them) will sway you. The book worship factor is high in this movie, and Suzy rightfully packs books in favor of other supplies for their journey.

Suzy reads aloud to Sam from these books as they make their way through island wilderness, and professes her love for stories and characters in sentiments that will be familiar to book lovers of any age.

Suzy (upon hearing Sam is an orphan):

I sometimes wish I was an orphan.

All my favorite characters are.

Sam:

I love you, but you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Excerpts from Suzy’s (unfortunately nonexistent) young adult reads—Shelly and the Secret Universe, The Francine Odysseys, The Girl from Jupiter, Disappearance of the 6th Grade, The Light of Seven Matchsticks, and The Return of Auntie Lorraine—have been animated by the director for your viewing pleasure.

Narrator Bob Balaban, who plays the town librarian, introduces them:

WHY aren’t these books real?? Sigh….
