2012 Must See Film Adaptations

Here are our 20 Must-See Film Adaptations for 2012, (NOT including comic book/graphic novel adaptations because that would add another 10 movies to the list. But Dark Knight, Spidey, Avengers, don't feel left out—we will be ALL over you too).

Will these movie adaptations live up to our impossibly high expectations? Only one way to find out—we'll have to see them all (preferrably with loads of movie snacks!).

20. Mirror Mirror (March 16, 2012)

Starring: Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer, Nathan Lane

Julia Roberts is hilariously over-the-top as the scheming Queen in this comedic adaptation of the classic Snow White tale. Lily Collins is perfectly cast as a sweet-but-tough Snow, and Armie Hammer provides impressive eye candy as Prince Charming. Oh, and the costumes! I've never wanted to raid a set's wardrobe so badly. Attention H&M: you did a Girl With the Dragon Tattoo clothing line, how 'bout rustling up some Evil Queen dresses?

19.  The Lorax (March 2, 2012)

Starring: Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Danny DeVito, Ed Helms

My favorite childhood environmental activist picturebook is getting a snazzy new look in this 3D adaptation. Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, and Danny DeVito lend their vocal talents, and Polyphonic Spree and Vampire Weekend provide the tunes.

No, you are not too old to see this.

18. The Lucky One (April 20, 2012)

Starring: Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling, Blythe Danner

I just can't quit you Nicholas Sparks, no matter how hard I try. You always deliver the sappy, sweet, slightly implausible romances that I eat up like an unattended bag of Reeses. There's not much in the way of nutritional value, and I feel like crap about myself afterward, but I keep coming back for more.

17. Great Expectations (TBD - 2012)

Starring: Jeremy Irvine, Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter

The single greatest reason to see this: to watch Helena Bonham Carter apply her bat-crazy Bellatrix Lestrange stylings to classic literature. What better way for her to make her oddball mark than by taking on the inspiration for every crazy cat lady, the incomparable spinster Miss Havisham?

16. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (March 2, 2012)

Starring: Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Famke Janssen

This new fairy tale adaptation gets poetic justice right—instead of playing sad little victims, Hansel and Gretel suit up, grab their weapons, and hunt some witches. 15 years after their first childhood encounter with a witch, they are leatherclad bounty hunters working off a serious grudge. Personally, I'm excited to see them get a little payback (not at all because the witch's oven part of the story gave me nightmares as a kid. Nope.).

15. The Raven (March 9, 2012)

Starring: John Cusack, Luke Evans, Alice Eve

Edgar Allan Poe is thrown into a murder mystery when a psycho-killer gets creative with his victims, taking inspiration from Poe's stories. A dark, gritty mystery, a great supporting cast, and John Cusack. What more do you need? Oh, a trailer? Ok:

14. John Carter (March 9, 2012)

Starring: Taylor Kitsch

Taylor Kitsch makes classic sci-fi novels sexy in this film based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs books. (I know, he could make term life insurance commercials sexy, but luckily this is a million times more entertaining).

In this trailer, we are treated to an exciting preview of a few epic battles on Mars, or Barsoom as it's known in the movie and the books.

 13. The Woman in Black (February 3, 2012)

Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Janet McTeer, Ciaran Hinds

Daniel Radcliffe isn't dealing with the charming ghosts of Hogwarts any longer.  This time he's in a creepy mansion, playing a young attorney sent to settle the affairs of a deceased client. There, he discovers the ghost of a scorned woman, the mysterious “woman in black.” Check out this trailer to get creeped out by dolls, music, and ghosts a lot more menacing than Nearly Headless Nick.

12. Les Miserables (December 7, 2012)

Starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Taylor Swift, Amanda Seyfried, Sascha Baron Cohen, Helena Bonham Carter

This musical adaptation hit the cast jackpot when it comes to star power and singing talent. There hasn't really been a good movie version of the musical yet, and my hope is that it will translate as well to the screen as Sweeney Todd did.

11. The Great Gatsby (December 25, 2012)

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire

Baz Luhrmann brings his signature bombastic style to any film he directs, so I can't wait to see what he does with this classic about the lives of these mega-rich Long Islanders in the twenties. If anyone can bring the excess of this era to life, it's Baz. See Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge if you need proof.

10. World War Z (December 21, 2012)

Starring Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, David Morse

Max Brooks' zombie apocalypse chronicle is now going to be a series, with this first film starting things off.

The story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself. 2012, baby! Let's watch humanity fall to it's knees.

9. Romeo & Juliet (TBD-2012)

Starring: Douglas Booth, Hailee Steinfeld, Ed Westwick

Do we really need another Romeo & Juliet movie? YES, of course we do. Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth are so cute together, and Ed Westwick was born to play the hot-headed Tybalt. The sneering! The angry Chuck Bass growl! I can see it now.....but I'm concerned that Romeo is too much of a pretty boy to believably survive a clash with this Tybalt. Douglas, you need to work on your "i don't care if you're my wife's cousin, i'll eat you for breakfast!" scowl.

8. Now Is Good (May 25, 2012)

Starring: Dakota Fanning, Jeremy Irvine, Kaya Scoledario

This movie adaptation of Jenny Downham's beautiful and lyrical tearjerker of a novel, Before I Die, might make you curl up into the fetal position as you sob into your Sour Patch Kids. So go see it with someone you feel comfortable blubbering in front of.

7. Anna Karenina (September 7, 2012)

Starring: Keira Knightley, Jude Law, Aaron Johnson, Matthew MacFadyen

Focus Features, director Joe Wright, and Keira Knightley seem to have a knack for turning literary classics into crack cocaine cinema, and we're about to get another fix! They're teaming up again to bring Anna Karenina to the big screen, with Keira taking on the title role. Starring alongside her will be Jude Law in the role of Aleksei Karenin, her husband, and Aaron Johnson as Count Vronsky. A constellation of British film stars will round out the cast, including Matthew MacFadyen (!!), aka Darcy to my fellow Pride-hards.

6. Warm Bodies (August 10, 2012)

Starring Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, John Malkovich

This film version of Isaac Marion's existential zombie novel, Warm Bodies, is getting the "Twilight with Zombies" tagline. The casting of the gorgeous Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer certainly does nothing to discourage the comparison. 1) I didn't know zombies could be so YUM, and 2) Teresa Palmer looks like Kristen Stewart hit the peroxide.

5. The Perks of Being a Wallflower (TBD - 2012)

Starring Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, Nina Dobrev, Ezra Miller

This movie has the perfect cast, the perfect setting, and the perfect director—who better to bring the classic coming-of-age novel to the screen than the author himself, Stephen Chbosky? Wallflower is one of those books people are incredibly passionate about from an early age, so the movie is going to either make loyal disciples or megaphone-mouth haters. I'm hoping Stephen's involvement guarantees the former.

4. Snow White & The Huntsman (June 1, 2012)

Starring Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth

YES! Another fairy tale heroine who isn't taking her fate lying down. With a little help from a drop dead gorgeous Huntsman, this warrior Snow will lead an army against Queen Ravenna, who sucks souls for breakfast and apparently likes to bathe in milk.

3. Breaking Dawn: Part 2 (November 16, 2012)

Starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner

What do we have to look forward to in the finale of the Twilight Saga? Bella will get lessons in being a vegetarian vampire, she and Edward will break a lot more furniture (now that Bella's unbreakable), their daughter Reneesme and Jacob will make googly eyes at each other (you know, a half hour or so after she learns how to walk), and a Volturi X-Men style showdown will come to little ol' Forks. Whether you think the movies have gotten a touch campy or not, you know you can't look away......

2. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (December 14, 2012)

Starring: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Evangeline Lilly, Orlando Bloom

Oh hobbitses—how I've missed you! I can't wait to revisit the Shire, and see Gandalf, Galadriel, Frodo, and Legolas again. Oh, and of course the precious. I could gaze at you for hours. We also get a whole new bunch of Tolkien characters to love and loathe.

Check out the trailer for some gorgeous Middle Earth scenery and a dwarf hymn to set the mood.

1. The Hunger Games (March 23, 2012)

Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutchinson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Sutherland

Yeah, this is THE MOST EXCITING movie of 2012 by a long shot. There is so much action and drama packed into this installment, you might want to wear a diaper.

We've seen hints of hotly-anticipated scenes in the trailer, but what remains to be seen—the arena and it's gory, awful, spectacular action—is still largely unknown. I do know that Jen Lawrence absolutely nails the Girl on Fire, and I know no matter what Gary Ross puts her through, whether it's a nerve-wrattlingly realistic arena, or a dinky low-fi playground, she'll SELL IT. And I'll buy it.

Here are some movies that aren't hitting theaters until 2013 and beyond, but we've already got our eye on them (and it's all twitchy with excitement):

Caster Chronicles Movie, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, Ender's Game, Uglies, Paranormalcy, The Host, Daughter of Smoke & Bone, Legend, How I Live Now, Rosaline, Incarceron, 13 Reasons Why, Forest of Hands & Teeth, The Seventh Son, The Alchemyst, Matched, Delirium, Before I Fall, Fallen, House of Night, Vampire Academy, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Tempest, Shiver, The Future of Us, White Crow, Here Lies Bridget, The Luxe, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, Divergent, The Scorpio Races + more!

Are there any 2012 book-to-film releases that YOU are super excited about? Let us know in the comments!

Ah, 2012.....the year continents crack up and fall into the ocean, the dead start walking, and fires and storms and floods (oh my!) wipe out humanity as we know it.
